About Friends of Abandoned Pets

Who knew in 1992 when Friends of Abandoned Pets was officially established, that 30 years later our volunteers would still be helping cats and dogs in our community.

The amount of volunteer hours has been staggering – and we’ve done it all: driving to help rescue a cat or dog in a dangerous situation; sitting out overnight with traps, trying to catch kittens, dogs and cats; giving advice related to the well-being of cats and dogs; taking part in major dog rescues; sitting with a traumatized cat or dog for hours and hours; medicating; force feeding; organizing dog walks, bake, book and garage sales and other fundraisers; reuniting lost pets with their owners; placing dogs and cats in permanent homes.

Even in the years when there were limited funds, and there were many of those, we were always able to help, in some way. Our philosophy has always been that while we can’t save every stray or abandoned cat or dog, we can make a difference in the lives of individual cats and dogs. And, we have been true to that philosophy throughout our existence.

We're very proud of what we've accomplished in the past 31 years!

What We're Up To

Several years ago, we advised our supporters that Friends of Abandoned Pets was curtailing its work to deal solely with the cats and dogs already in our care. This was mainly due to a larger number of pets already in foster homes, an unprecedented number of previously adopted pets being returned to our care and fewer volunteers to manage the organization’s day-to-day tasks.

At that time, we found it challenging to continue to do all the work needed to continue to operate effectively, making it difficult to take on any other stray dogs and cats and still making our priority the care of our foster pets. We felt that encouraging our foster homes to adopt their foster pets and while making arrangements with another rescue to take over their care in the future would enable us to wind down our operations, with a view to closing entirely.

After re-evaluating the decision to close due to concerns about the well-being of our long term foster pets as well as wanting to be able to continue our long-standing practice of accepting returns of previously-adopted FOAP pets, the Board of Directors reconsidered that decision and agreed that FOAP would continue to operate. As a result, we have been able to look after FOAP pets and to help with other cats and dogs as well.

We do not have any major fundraising events planned at the moment but we continue to receive funding through bequests and donations, for which we are grateful. While we haven’t been in a financial position to help ‘new’ cats and dogs as much as we had in some years, we have continued to look after our pets in foster homes and previously adopted returned FOAP pets and to provide direct assistance to other cats and dogs as well.

We remain available to provide help, through our incoming phone line and email, for anyone with stray cat and dog related issues and are looking forward to helping more in the months and years ahead.

Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act

Friends of Abandoned Pets was incorporated federally and received its charitable status in 1992. In 2014, the federal government required that groups such as ours, incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act, be continued under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. At its Annual General Meeting in October of that year, members approved the special resolution and bylaws as presented.

This does not affect our charitable registration status and our Charitable Registration Number continues to be 13622 4037 RR0001.
