ABOUT FOAP
Friends of Abandoned Pets (FOAP) is an independent non-profit charitable organization
situated in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
We are a group of dedicated and caring people who love animals and want to make a difference in our community. FOAP is sensitive to the plight of abandoned, homeless cats and dogs in our area, and are prepared to give our time and energy to help give them a second chance. We are all volunteers. Our reward is to see a frightened, often desperately thin, sometimes injured, homeless cat or dog blossom into a self-confident, happy pet in a loving home. We all help in our own way. Since we do not have a building in which to house animals, they stay in temporary foster homes until a permanent adoptive home is found. FOAP is always in need of caring foster homes, who are willing to provide food, love, and shelter; FOAP pays for all veterinarian costs while they are under foster care. Once an animal is adopted, we charge an adoption fee to help recover some of the veterinarian expenses.
In 1980, a few volunteers who worked with the Animal Defence League of Canada decided it was necessary to help the homeless animals on the streets of Ottawa, Ontario.
They formed the Pet Care Committee and in their first year of operation they placed about a dozen animals in new homes.
By 1986, that number had increased to about 160 animals. In 1987, the Pet Care Committee became Pet Owners United Inc., an organization founded by Hilary Mackey. With Mrs. Mackey's passing in 1991, Pet Owners United Inc, led by Lorraine Booth, became a registered charitable organization and Friends of Abandoned Pets came into being on April 1, 1992.
